The Black Jug Fishing Haggle – Competition was on last weekend. Around 120 anglers both local and quite a few from town spent the weekend fishing around Great Barrier Island trying to land that big snapper. This event is held twice annually on the Barrier and the main prize is for the heaviest Snapper. Winner takes it all. The Jackpot was around 6500 NZD this time and an angler from town won it with an 11-ish kg snapper.
The weather has been great lately, warm and sunny and I have been working most of the week, but today I got my camera out and went for a ride towards Schooner Bay, yet again. On the way I had to stop to take pictures of the following:
2 Snapper were arrested in Schooner Bay yesterday. South-westerlies were blowing at around 20 knots and I decided to take the quad and go for a quick look around Schooner Bay at just about dead-low tide. It is about a 20 minute casual drive from my place and the bay holds, according to what I heard, good kelp beds, which usually produce good snapper.
I went to Medland’s Beach on Friday and hiked around the area, looking for a ledge. Went up to the ridge (see picture), saw some mean ones on the other side, but had no access to them. Besides the swell was quite rough. The swell turned out to be a problem all day… Continue reading 2 Days Fishing
I got up this morning around 0600 and had plans to go fishing. However, the place is still a mess, things are disorganized and lying on the ground. You put something down, you turn around and it is gone. Frustrating at times… So yeah, after 20 minutes of looking for my gear I decided not to go fishing and to tidy up the place instead. Besides, it is a bit hard going at the moment without a car, and my neighbor gave me some home made sausages yesterday; don’t need any fish for eating today.
