Station Rock Lookout at the top of Medland Road in Tryphena should not be missed. Auckland Council has cut a safe and accessible track to the top of one of the highest peaks in Tryphena. The track is easy to spot, it’s at the highest point of Medland road, there is a sign on the right (when driving north) and a car park on the left. It’s about a 15 minute walk from the car park to the top and you can enjoy expansive views over Tryphena Harbour and the entire Colville Channel. Take your lunch with you, sit on the massive boulders and relax for a while. Once you’re up there, go for a little stroll on the cut track and you will see the Aotea FM (our local community radio) transmitter as well.

Walk passed the transmitter (we’re talking less than 50 m from the lookout) and sit on the other side of the boulders, enjoying expansive views to the east coast beaches.

  1. Looks like a swell running on the East coast there mate. Well it’s not so long now, I’ll be in NZ in 10 days so hopefully with you in 2 weeks. I expect yellow tails will be involved at some point, or my name’s not Paul xxxxx
