Groupies and Friends

I had some help on BENIsLAND from my good friends, the Fantastics, and from a pair of surprise visitors, whom I believe to actually be BENIsLAND groupies (they heavily denied it, but well, denial is always easy) during the last two weeks. On top of the good company, they helped with various projects around the place. It was comforting to see others do some of the daily jobs like preparing and stacking fire wood, tidying up the gardens, the drive way and pruning the plum trees. I shouldn’t say it, but I could get used to it… hehe

Anne enjoyed chopping firewood; she was quite capable with the long axe and tomahawk. Nadine wasn't fond of the axe but pulled more than just her weight.

I get positive feedback from friends and readers of the blog regarding the lifestyle I chose and what I’m doing in general. Compliments and suggestions are always welcome; it is good to know that you are following and supporting me, especially on those rough days here, where the motivation drops too low.

Quite frankly, it was touching to see that the girls who lived with me for a week did not complain once about the sub-standard living conditions here on BENIsLAND. I’ve heard friends and family state things such as: “You won’t see me visiting until you have a flush toilet.” Or “Build a nice house first and I’ll think of planing a trip.” Perhaps it is an age thing, or perhaps even my ravishing entertainment skills…

Obviously, I try to be a good host, but nevertheless, I was stoked with my groupies and as a token of my appreciation took them fishing twice. They did a splendid job, nothing got broken, no one got hurt, they caught some good fish on their own on both occasions and were actually pretty quick on the rocks.

The fishing session with the Fantastics could have been better but we were unable to fish the spot I had designated, and instead gave our best to land some fish in pretty shallow water with a strong head-on wind. Things got broken on this trip, but no one got hurt and we had a good day and a feed of snapper and kahawai.

Gavin built me another compost bin, which should in theory prepare compost more quickly than the one I designed some time ago.

New compost bin. This one will hold the heat much better.

Let me thank all the people who came out to see me this year. It was top to catch up and do stuff, and I hope things will be more comfortable when you come again.

Cheers Ralfi, Urbi, Daniel, Paul, Xtian, Anne, Nadine, Gavin, Kylie!

  1. My pleasure mate! As always I had a great time. I love the place, as you’re well aware! And although not much physically gets done when I’m around (Curse those yellow tails!) I think we enjoy some sort of progress in the general scheme of things. I’ll certainly be back as long as you’ll have me anyway! Keep up the good work! Paul xxxxx
